FREE NT Air Brake Practice Test 1

We’re glad you stopped by to practice your knowledge of air brakes! We have nine Northwest Territories Air Brakes Practice Tests for you, of which this one is just the first. We designed these practice tests to help you pass the official Air Brakes knowledge test on your first try.

In Northwest Territories, all applicants for a commercial driver’s licence (Classes 1 through 4) must be at least 18 years of age, hold a Class 5 driver’s licence, pass a vision test, and submit a medical report. Then you must pass a general knowledge test on the theory of commercial driving. If you’ll be applying for an Air Brake Endorsement (usually unavailable for Class 4), you must also complete an approved Air Brake course and pass a separate Air Brake knowledge test. For Class 1, the Air Brake endorsement is mandatory because virtually all Class 1 vehicles in Northwest Territories have air brakes. The air brake knowledge test is based on the official NT Air Brake Manual.

Passing the general knowledge test will entitle you to a commercial learner’s permit. This permit will allow you to practice commercial driving under supervision as you prepare to take your road test and pre-trip inspection test. (You can practice operating a commercial vehicle with air brakes even if you haven’t met all the requirements for an Air Brake endorsement.) In Northwest Territories, Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) is not currently required for any class of licence.

When you’re ready, you can schedule a road test (which includes a pre-trip inspection test) for your commercial driver’s licence. You must take the test in a vehicle that’s representative of the class of licence you’re applying for. For an air brake endorsement, you must take these tests in a vehicle equipped with air brakes.

Unfortunately, neither reading the official Air Brake Manual nor taking a short Air Brake course can ensure you’ll pass the Air Brakes knowledge test on your first try. But we can!

Each of our nine Northwest Territories Air Brakes Practice Tests includes 35 multiple-choice questions on air brakes. All questions are up to date as of May 2025 and based on the official Air Brake Manual.

If you get stuck on a practice question, you can ask our AI Assistant to discuss the question further, give you a hint, or answer your own questions about operating commercial vehicles. If you still miss the question, the AI Assistant will give you the correct answer and explain why it is correct.
