How to Pass Your ICBC Driver’s License Road Test in 2024

The ICBC road test (also known as “ICBC driving test”, “ICBC practical exam”, or “ICBC behind-the-wheel test”) in British Columbia is a practical test of the driver’s ability to drive a car on the road. The test should be taken at the ICBC Driver Testing Office, not at the ICBC Driver Licensing office.

What will the road test examiner be looking for?

  • The ability to drive the car on a public road.
  • The ability to obey the rules of the road (traffic laws).
  • The ability to park the car on a public street or a private lot.
  • The ability to drive the car on a public street in bad weather and in poor visibility (for example, during the night or in the rain).
  • The ability to parallel park the car on a public street or a private lot.
  • The ability to drive the car in a smooth manner.
  • The ability to make a left turn at an intersection (only in some cases).
  • The ability to make a right turn on a two-way street at an intersection (only in some cases).
  • The ability to make a right turn on a one-way street at an intersection (only in some cases).
  • The ability to make a right turn at an intersection (only in some cases).
  • The ability to make a right turn at a corner.
  • The ability to pass other cars at an intersection.
  • The ability to pass other cars on a highway.
  • The ability to back up the car.
  • The ability to park the car in the parking space provided.
  • The ability to drive the car in bad weather and in poor visibility (for example, during the night or in the rain).

The candidate must obey the rules of the road and the examiner. If the driver disobeys or does not understand the examiner’s instructions, the examiner will fail the driver. A road test is usually done in one of the following weather conditions: sunny weather, bad weather, or poor visibility, such as during the night or in the rain.

If the driver makes a mistake, the examiner will tell the driver to back up. The examiner will then explain what the driver did wrong. The examiner will also tell the driver to drive on. The examiner will usually tell the driver when to turn left at an intersection. The examiner will tell the driver to stop if the driver does any of the following:
• Fails to stop at a stop sign.
• Fails to yield to a pedestrian.
• Goes through a red light.
• Drives in the wrong lane or goes the wrong way.
• Fails to obey the rules of the road (traffic signs, traffic signals and lane markings).
• Does not follow the examiner’s instructions.

What can I do to prepare?

The most important thing is to have a good knowledge of BC road rules and to have practiced a lot of driving. You do not need to have a lot of driving experience to take the test, but you do need to be familiar with the laws and safety rules that apply to driving. The more you know, the better you will perform.

When do I take the Road Test?

The ICBC road test is not taken until the individual has already passed both the ICBC knowledge test and the vision test. All the tests must be taken within a two-year period.

How long does the ICBC Road Test take?

The ICBC Road Test takes about 45 minutes.

How long do I have to wait after I take the Road Test?

You must wait 48 hours after each test before taking a new test. You can get the results immediately, but you cannot get your license until you have waited 48 hours after all tests have been completed.

What happens if I fail the ICBC Road Test?

If you fail any part of the road test, you may take the test again after waiting 48 hours. If you fail the road test three times, you will not be eligible for your license until you have taken and passed the Driver Improvement Program.

What should I bring to my road test?

When you come for your test, be sure to bring:

How do I prepare for my ICBC road test appointment?

Make sure your vehicle is in good working condition. Before the road test, the examiner will inspect your car. Here’s a vehicle safety checklist with some things that the examiner will check:

  • Tires.
  • Brakes.
  • Horn.
  • Headlights.
  • Lights.
  • Windshield wipers.
  • Mirrors.
  • Window tinting.

You can book your ICBC road test by going to the Driver Licensing section on the ICBC website.

The ICBC road test has been criticized for being too easy to pass. This is because the test is based on the driver’s “functional” rather than “performance” abilities. The functional abilities are those that do not require the driver to be alert, such as parallel parking. “Performance” abilities, such as driving in adverse weather conditions, require greater skills and attention. The ICBC test does not require the driver to be alert and focused on the road, but rather to follow directions from the examiner.
