View All PlansDemand for Class 1 drivers is high in New Brunswick, driven by several factors. A key part of the economy involves the extraction, harvesting, and processing of natural resources. New Brunswick provides the only land-based connection to the other three provinces of Atlantic Canada. And New Brunswick has strong trade relationships with the United States, Europe, Latin America, and Asia.
To apply for a Class 1 commercial driver’s licence in New Brunswick, you must be at least 18 years old, hold a Class 5 driver’s licence, pass a vision test, undergo a medical exam, and submit a medical examination report.
After you submit the medical report, you must pass an in-person knowledge test on the theory of driving Class 1 vehicles. The passing score is 80%. Because practically all Class 1 vehicles in New Brunswick have air brakes, you must also obtain an Air Brake endorsement. To do this, complete an approved Air Brake Course, pass the in-person Air Brake knowledge test, and pass the official practical air brake test. You must complete these steps and get your endorsement before you start driving Class 1 vehicles unsupervised.
Once you pass the Class 1 knowledge test, you may obtain a Class 1 learner’s licence, which will allow you to practice commercial driving under supervision.
In New Brunswick, before you may book your road test for a Class 1 licence, you must also complete Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT). The MELT course consists of at least 112 hours of classroom training and hands-on training in operating large semi-trucks, including their air brakes. (Some MELT course providers may require you to have an Air Brake endorsement before enrolling in their course.)
Once you’ve completed MELT, you may take the road test for a commercial driver’s licence.
Service New Brunswick does not appear to have published a general commercial driver’s license manual, though it has published an official Air Brake Manual. Part 9 of the New Brunswick Driver’s Handbook has just a little information about general commercial driving. If you would like more intensive knowledge training in Class 1 driving than this, you’ve come to the right place!
