To operate vehicles equipped with air brakes, drivers must pass the New Brunswick Air Brake Test, which adds an Air Brake endorsement to the driver’s commercial licence. The New Brunswick Air Brake Manual is an official publication of the New Brunswick Department of Public Safety, Government of New Brunswick, Canada and the primary reference for preparing for this test. When used in conjunction with our suite of New Brunswick practice tests for each stage of your driving certification and restriction-removal process, this handbook (available in digital format) makes studying easier. The New Brunswick Air Brake Endorsement handbook features interactive AI support, is available in English and French, and comes with an audio version.
This manual features a large illustration of a complete dual air brake system (located on the inside cover) and study questions at the end of each section. In addition to these questions, our suite of practice tests provides immediate feedback on all responses and models the format and material presented in the official New Brunswick Knowledge Exam. Combining these resources ensures you pass the air brake test.
To be eligible for the New Brunswick Air Brake Endorsement, you must hold a valid Class 5 (or higher) driver’s licence from any Canadian jurisdiction, complete an approved air brake course, and pass both written and practical tests administered at Service New Brunswick (SNB).
Passing the Air Brakes Test is no simple task. You must be familiar with the various components of an air brake system, including the Compressor (which generates compressed air for the braking system), the Air Dryer (which removes moisture from compressed air before entering other system parts), the Tanks (which store pressurized air used for braking), the Valves (which control airflow within the system and maintain proper pressure levels), and the Brake Chambers (which convert pressurized air into mechanical force applied to wheel brakes). You must also understand how to perform safety inspections and follow proper operating procedures when using an air brake-equipped vehicle, including pre-trip inspections, identifying potential issues or malfunctions, ensuring all controls are functional, and verifying no leaks in hoses or connections.
Described above is just some of what you must know for the official Air Brake Test. But don’t fear. This handbook and our suite of practice tests will ensure you pass on your first attempt.
