To obtain a driver’s licence in British Columbia, all applicants must complete the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP), which is designed to help new drivers gain experience gradually. The minimum age for obtaining a Learner’s (L) licence is 16, with parental consent required for those under 19. You must pass a vision screening and a knowledge test consisting of multiple-choice questions based on the Learn to Drive Smart handbook, an official reference published by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC). Here\s the British Columbia drivers handbook to help you study!

As you begin your learning phase, you will study and master the various aspects of driving theory. This manual describes the rules of the road, traffic signs, safe driving practices, and emergency strategies. You should read its contents at least once to learn more about environmental hazards, the licensing process, and your responsibilities as a driver. After holding a Learner’s licence for at least 12 months (or 8 months if you complete an approved driver training course) and passing the Class 7 road test, you’ll be eligible for a Novice (N) licence. The final step in the graduated licensing program is the Full (Class 5) licence, which you’ll be issued after holding a Novice licence for 24 months (or 18 months if you completed an approved course) and passing the Class 5 road test.

Since traffic rules in British Columbia may change over time, we will always make the latest version of this handbook available to you. With nonstop browser-based access, you can use this resource anytime, anywhere in the world. All you need is a compatible device and a stable internet connection. To maximize your chances of passing the official written knowledge exam on your first attempt, you should also use our ICBC practice test. It contains 50 multiple-choice questions based on this manual, which also serves as the basis for the official exam. Learn to Drive Smart is your guide to driving safely. You can read it whenever you have some free time during a busy day, or you can include it in an extended study session.
