In New Brunswick, obtaining a driver’s licence requires you to complete the Graduated Driver’s Licence (CDL) program, which is designed to help new drivers gain experience and gradually build their driving skills. The licensing process begins with the Class 7 Level 1 Learner’s Licence, which is issued after passing a vision screening and a written test. Did you know that the official written test is based entirely on the New Brunswick Driver’s Handbook, which is published under the authority of the Province of New Brunswick’s Department of Public Safety? This essential resource can be a great addition to your study routine. We recommend reading its contents at least once because it includes important information on traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices.
After practising driving for 12 months (or 8 months if you complete a recognized driver training course) and passing a road test, you will progress to a Class 7 Level 2 Licence. For the next 12 months, you can drive with up to three passengers during daylight hours (unless certain conditions are met). While the GDL allows y ou to gain behind-the-wheel experience, it is crucial to continue studying driving theory even after you’ve passed the official written knowledge exam. A Full Class 5 Licence is granted after successfully completing 24 months in the GDL program, so you should dedicate at least a few weeks to studying the contents of this manual.
All you need to access this resource is a compatible device and a stable internet connection. If you wish to use it at a later time, you can download the handbook to your device in PDF format. The version we offer is up to date as of May 2025, so you can study the the latest updates brought by DPS. To increase your chances of passing the official written knowledge exam on your first attempt, we recommend practising with our New Brunswick Practice Test. You get unlimited attempts and nonstop access to this intuitive tool, which can be used alongside the official New Brunswick Driver’s Handbook to reinforce your understanding of key concepts and road rules.
